Flexible welding workshop for ESS

The European Spallation Source (ESS) will become a multidisciplinary research facility based on the world's most powerful neutron source. ESS is a European research project currently being built in Lund. ESS contacted us at WorkCon when they needed to design two new welding spaces, one for black steel and one for aluminum/stainless steel. The challenge was to create a flexible solution within a limited space, and it was with the smallest possible margin that we managed to fit the containers into their facility. However, by using containers as the format, flexibility is ensured, as these welding workshops can be relocated to other areas on the site in the future.
The European Spallation Source (ESS), one of the world’s most advanced research facilities, is being built in Lund and will become a central hub for European scientific research. When ESS needed two custom-designed welding spaces – one for black steel and one for aluminum/stainless steel – they turned to WorkCon for a flexible and sustainable solution.
The Challenge: Maximum Functionality in a Limited Space
The project required a smart solution to fit the welding containers into an already limited area, where every centimeter mattered. WorkCon designed and delivered custom-built containers that not only fit perfectly into the space but also ensured that the welding workshops could be reused and relocated within the facility as needed.
Tailored Solutions for a High-Tech Research Environment
Given ESS's strict safety requirements and advanced work environment, WorkCon developed the containers with a range of special adaptations to meet the technical and safety needs:
-
Advanced Ventilation – A system designed to manage welding fumes and particles in specialized environments.
-
Windows for Visibility – To enhance safety and provide better control over the work.
-
Flame-Proof Interior – Ensures a safe working environment during welding.
-
Reinforced Roof – Allows for additional storage without affecting the structure.
-
Ready for Use Upon Delivery – Fully equipped welding workshops ready to use immediately.
-
Dismantlable – Designed for easy disassembly and relocation as needed.
Flexibility for Future Needs
By using containers as a base, WorkCon created a modular and flexible solution that can be adapted to ESS's future needs. The project demonstrates how innovative design and custom-built containers can solve complex spatial challenges and create long-term opportunities for both industry and research.
